Like bean bags, plastic cones and foam balls, the image of hula hoops probably conjures up hazy primary school memories of bodged together PE lessons in your vest and pants.
Project Hoop – an intense full body workout using hula hoops – is not that.
Likened by its founder, Rochene Johnston, to the underground fisty cuffs of cult film classic Fight Club, these hula hooping classes will leave you sweating, toned and (if you’re as hard-core as Rochene) possibly bruised.
“I’ve been hula hooping for under two years,” says the 31-year-old, her three hoops propped up against the foot of the Brian Clough statue, in King Street.
Rochene, who lives in Lenton and is an English lecturer by trade, is small but mighty. Every inch of her small frame is pure muscle, one really wouldn’t want to get in a fight with her.
